Y’all, it was a night full of music made memories during the 55th Academy of Country Music Awards. This pandemic award show was pushed back from its original April 5th date set to take the stage in Las Vegas. Instead, the ACM Awards took place in Nashville for the very first time. Last night was surely a night our country stars will never forget. As Carrie Underwood said, “2020, man.”
The 55th ACM Awards
The live ACM Awards looked a lot different than your average award show. Face masks, face shields, no guests in the audience, socially distanced band members, and no hugging or handshaking the presenter(s) after winning an award. COVID-19 had nothing on the performances and presentations that took place at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, Bluebird Cafe, and Grand Ole Opry House. Our western wear stylists were watching in the comfort of their homes while LED lights took the place of families, friends, and fans in the audience.
The Academy of Country Music Awards was unprecedented in several ways. A night full of achievements didn’t hide from the pandemic. Instead, the ACM Awards had artists accepting awards in face masks and thanking empty crowds. With social distancing measures in place among performers, presenters, winners, staff, and crew members.
55th Academy of Country Music Awards Winners
We celebrated the Song of the Year, Duo of the Year, New Female Vocalist, and there was even a tie for the most significant award of the night: Entertainer of the Year.
Old Dominion was the 55th Academy of Country Music Awards winner with the most awards of the evening, including Group of the Year and Song of the Year with “One Man Band.” The talented group of men came out to collect their awards with an empty audience, and each member of the band wore a face mask.
Luke Combs came to the ACM Awards to perform, but he also took home some of the biggest prizes of the evening. He won Album of the Year and Male Artist of the Year! Female Artist of the Year went to the sensational Maren Morris, who also performed “To Hell & Back.”
One of the most significant 55th ACM Awards is Entertainer of the Year. For the first time, there was a tie! Thomas Rhett and Carrie Underwood both took home the achievement for Entertainer of the Year. This was Rhett’s first time winning in the Entertainer category, but Underwood took home her third win.
ACM Awards Performers
An unprecedented night included socially distanced performances at the iconic Nashville venues: Ryman Auditorium, Bluebird Cafe, and Grand Ole Opry House. ACM Awards performers included Luke Bryan, who transported viewers to Hawaii with a performance of his hit song, “One Margarita”. Dan + Shay looked snazzy as ever during their performance of their latest single, “I Should Probably Go To Bed”.
Kane Brown gave a legendary performance of his song, “Worldwide Beautiful”, with the help of socially distance backup singers in the Opry House’s balcony. You could feel the power of the lyrics “You’re missing every color if you’re only seeing black and white. Look around and see worldwide beautiful.”
The iconic Taylor Swift returned to the ACM Awards stage for the first time in seven years to perform her latest song, “Betty”, from her new album, “Folklore”. Swift took the stage with only a harmonica player with a pitch-black atmosphere with a light highlighting her as she played guitar. It was truly a beautiful performance that even included a TV-friendly lyric switch instead of dropping the F-bomb.
As per usual, the female country music stars gave their all on stage. Gabby Barrett belted her way through the breakout hit, “I Hope”. Another iconic ACM Awards performer was Miranda Lambert sang her hit, “Bluebird”, at the legendary Bluebird Cafe. One of the most important performances was by Mickey Guyton, who sang her heart out on her song, “What Are You Gonna Tell Her?” Host, Keith Urban, came out to play piano for Guyton but stayed out of the way as all spotlight was on her.
