Our Sheplers cowboys can all agree that there is nothing better than farmhouse-inspired recipes. When it comes to homestyle country cooking, we don’t play games, using only the freshest ingredients for that farm-to-table feeling. To help bring the sweet aroma of homestyle cooking to your home, we have asked our cattlemen to share their favorite country dinner ideas for the whole family.

Essential Homestyle Recipes

One of our favorite qualities in homestyle cooking is that secret ingredient – the love and effort poured into every dish. We are spilling some of our country cooking secrets with our 3 favorite farmhouse-inspired recipes that will surely leave your whole family begging for more.

Best Country Fried Chicken

There is nothing better than crispy, perfectly seasoned fried chicken – it is truly every cowboy’s dream. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together a large egg, milk, and lemon juice. In a separate bowl, sift the flour and add dried thyme, paprika, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Dip your chicken in your seasoned flour, making sure to coat both sides, and shake off any excess. Dip the chicken into the egg mixture and then back into the flour.

Now it’s time for the fun part! Heat the oil to about 375 degrees and deep fry the breaded chicken, a few pieces at a time, for roughly 6-10 minutes on both sides. Once your chicken is golden brown and the juices run clear, congratulate yourself – you’ve just made the best country fried chicken ever.

This is the perfect farmhouse recipe idea to pair with green beans, mashed potatoes, or a good cornbread casserole. Our cowboys are certain your family will be hanging up their cowboy hats and fighting for the last piece of that deliciously crispy country fried chicken.

Country Chili

Every country-raised westerner takes two things very seriously, their cowboy boots and their country chili. This is an easy farmhouse recipe that’s perfect for a cozy weeknight meal or a country dinner party, where you’ll impress all your guests with this dish. All you’ll need is about a pound of ground beef, an onion, a can of Rotel-brand tomatoes, a can of southwestern-style beans, and a cup of beef broth.

Chop the onion and cook on medium heat until they’re translucent. Season the meat with salt and pepper, to taste, then brown the ground beef and drain the excess fat. Add the Rotel tomatoes and southwestern-style beans to the pan; reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring your country chili every few minutes. Add beef broth.

Serve your country chili with sour cream and shredded cheese.

This farmhouse-inspired recipe for country chili doesn’t leave you trapped in the kitchen for hours on end, so it’s great to serve as an appetizer at a large dinner party. In the spirit of the country dish, create a farmhouse tablescape with western-inspired dinnerware and decór such as western placemats or a table runner. Our online western store carries everything you need to set your farmhouse table.

Farmhouse Corn Salad

One of our favorite farmhouse recipes is a corn salad; it’s the perfect side or appetizer for any country dinner ideas you may have and is so easy to make! Chop up some cucumber and slice some radishes. Grill buttered corn over medium heat for roughly 10 minutes, turning occasionally until it’s lightly browned. Cut the kernels off the cobs and add the chopped cucumber, sliced radishes, and basil leaves. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Why use store-bought dressing when you can easily make your own? Add a quarter cup of olive oil, 2 tablespoons of sherry vinegar, and a tablespoon of white balsamic vinegar into a jar; screw on the lid and shake it up. Coat your farmhouse corn salad with the homemade dressing. There’s nothing people love more than simple country cooking with farm-fresh ingredients.
