Cowboy Hat-Wearing Etiquette

Ever wear a cowboy hat and hear someone say, “You’re doing it wrong”? A cowboy hat can be the perfect accessory to complete your look; however, if you are not wearing it properly, you could be “doing it wrong.”  Avoid cowboy hat-wearing fashion fines by following simple cowboy hat-wearing etiquette.

Although cowboy hat etiquette changes with the times and the location, some rules are pretty universal:

  • NEVER get caught wearing your cowboy hat backwards.
  • When you are indoors, your hat should be off
  • Don’t choose a cowboy hat to complete your attire if the occasion is formal
  • You should not eat with your hat on, unless you are outdoors at a barbeque or picnic or, of course, at a rodeo!

When it comes to wearing a cowboy hat, the saying “fake it til you make it” does not apply. If you do not know how to wear a cowboy hat properly, you will at least want to figure out how before you go out in public. Improper wear of a cowboy hat has been long known to cause bad luck. If your hat has some sort of adornment on top it will allow you to know that it is the left side of your hat.

If you are still confused on which end is the front and back, the front end typically is narrower.

Another cowboy hat-wearing tip: felt hats were intended for winter and straw for summer. However, if you are going to a formal event, straw hats are never recommended.

When it comes to wearing your cowboy hat properly, use your best judgment in the given situation; if Sheplers helps you get it right…your welcome cowboy!
