How to Distress Your Jeans

Purchasing distressed jeans from a store can be pricey, and the hunt for the perfect pair of jeans can be impossible (without Sheplers western store online, of course). But, what if we told you that you can distress your jeans in a few easy steps? Well you heard it here first – you can distress your jeans right at home!

What You’ll Need

  • A pair of jeans
  • A sharp pair of scissors
  • Tweezers
  • Sandpaper
  • Razor
  • Pencil or chalk
  • Washing machine & dryer

How to Distress Your Jeans

  1. Put the jeans on so you can have an idea of the areas in which you wish to distress. Use the pencil or chalk to make a mark around the areas.
  2. Use the sandpaper over those areas for a soft and extra worn out look. You can skip this step if you wish to create minimally distressed jeans.
  3. Use the scissors to cut straight, horizonal slits over the areas you wish to distress. The slits should be ½ an inch to ¾ of an inch from each other.
  4. There are synthetic threads called indigo threads – you’ll know them when you see them. Use the tweezers to pull the indigo threats, but only in the areas you’ve cut (it’s okay if you don’t get them all).
  5. Use the razor to fray the pockets and other edges you want to fray by moving the razor back and forth on the edge.
  6. After cutting all the areas you want to cut and have pulled out most of the indigo threads, put your jeans in the washer, on the cold water setting, to create organic-looking frays.
  7. Once they’re washed put them in the dryer to further natural distressing!

Did you know that you may be accidentally ruining your favorite pair of jeans from Sheplers?

While you most certainly may not be meaning to do so, by throwing your jeans in the washing machine every time after you wear them, you are destroying their shape and color. Denim expert Chip Bergh, CEO of Levi Strauss & Co., says of his own jeans, “these jeans are maybe a year old and these have yet to see a washing machine.”

Shep Jeans

Bergh goes onto say that “if you talk to real denim aficionados, they tell you don’t wash your blue jeans.”

But if you can’t wash your jeans from Sheplers, then how are you supposed to keep them clean? Here are some alternative ways to make sure your jeans stay fresh from the Levi’s master himself:

  • Eliminate odor by spritzing jeans with white vinegar or vodka and then hanging them out to dry.
  • Freeze your jeans once a month to kill off the smell caused by bacteria.
  • Turn your jeans inside out and then freeze them for two days at a time.

Finding the perfect fitting pair of jeans is one of the most challenging feats when it comes to completing your wardrobe. However, once you finally do, chances are that you will want to rock them for as long as you can.

Shep Replace Jeans

In order to make sure that the perfect pair of jeans from Sheplers lasts as long as you want them to, check out these tips on how to take care of your favorite jeans.

Don’t:

  • Forget to add a cup of vinegar when you wash them in order to prevent fading.
  • Dry your jeans in the dryer.
  • Forget that you can simply put your jeans in the freezer to freshen them up.
  • Neglect to have your jeans hemmed if they are too long.
  • Wash your jeans too much, this will only make them fade and get worn out faster.

Do:

  • Wash them inside out.
  • Rotate through at least three pairs of jeans so you don’t wear out your favorite pair.
  • Wear them at least three times before washing them.
  • Fold your jeans instead of hanging them in order to prevent stretching out the fibers.
  • Wash by hand instead of in a washing machine.

How to Tell When it is Time to Replace Your Jeans

Some wardrobe staples are appropriate at any time of the year, no matter if it is fall, winter, spring or summer. You have probably already guessed it, but jeans are permanently on that list.

Shep Jeans

There’s only one problem – finding the perfect fitting pair of jeans can prove to be one of the hardest tasks for women. For this reason, many end up wearing jeans for much longer than their shelf life. In order to avoid this happening to you, check out these three tips from Sheplers on how to tell when it is time to replace your jeans.

  1. They are too worn in. When you first bought your favorite pair of jeans, were they a dark denim color? Are they currently a distressed light-shade of blue with holes in the knees? If you answered ‘yes’ to the above questions, then it is time to invest in a new pair of jeans.
  2. Your jeans are too short. If your jeans were long enough when you bought them and they are all of a sudden too short after one too many go-arounds in the washing machine throughout the years, then it is time to check out one of these jean options from Sheplers.
  3. The zipper is basically useless. If you can get your jeans on and off without undoing the zipper, then it means that they are worn out from years of use. Unfortunately, it also means that it is time to invest in another pair of jeans.

Wrangler Jeans Vs. Levi’s Jeans

When it comes to western style clothes, a good pair of jeans are a staple, and every cowboy seems to have their own preferences. So how do you choose between some of the most famous denim brands of all time, Wrangler and Levi’s? While some jeans preferences are based on the brand’s reputation, some decisions are made based on fit. You will need to decide what is most important to you.

Wrangler 13MWZ Cowboy Cut Rigid Original Fit Jeans

Wrangler Jeans

We are going to focus specifically on the 13MWZ Cowboy Cut Rigid Original Fit Jeans design, one of our most popular items in men’s western wear.

  • If your western wear includes numerous pairs of cowboy boots, these jeans may be for you as they are specifically designed to wear with cowboy boots.
  • These jeans feature a traditional zipper fly.
  • This specific style has a roomier leg and rear, but there is also a slim version available (Wrangler 936). You will have to decide which fit you prefer.
  • The texture of Wrangler denim tends to be rougher and feels like a thicker thread than Levi’s.
  • Wrangler jeans tend to be more affordable with prices almost half as much as Levi’s.

Levi’s Jeans

A popular pair of Levi’s jeans at Sheplers, the Levi’s 501 Jeans–Original Shrink-to-Fit, are another good choice for men’s western wear wardrobe.

  • Levi’s 501 jeans have a lower rise (about an inch) than Wrangler.
  • This specific pair features a button fly rather than a zipper.
  • The coin pocket is positioned lower on the Levi’s 501 than the Wrangler 13MWZ.
  • If you are not a fan of the Shrink-to-Fit fit, the 501 style also comes in a straight leg fit.
  • Depending on the fit, the 501 collection also comes in a variety of colors including indigo, black, green, light blue, and gray.

Our Sheplers cowboys recommend finding the fit you prefer before buying multiple jeans of the same style.

At the end of the day, jeans are a personal preference. We suggest you try out both brands of denim and see which ones you like the best. Browse our large selection of denim in our men’s western wear collection and find the pair that is right for you.
